Truth & Innovation Artist Showcase | Rooted In Love: The Recultivation of Lincoln Heights - A Historic Black Community

“Rooted In Love: The Recultivation of Lincoln Heights – A Historic Black Community” is a documentary born from a profound desire to capture the glory, challenges, and resilience of one of America’s historic Black communities.

The Village of Lincoln Heights was the first African American self-governing community north of the Mason-Dixon Line, a feat innovative in itself. It has an extremely rich history reminiscent of thriving black communities like Rosewood in Tulsa, Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, and more. Through a captivating exploration using archival photos, film footage from bygone eras, and contemporary recordings, our project aims to illuminate the remarkable journey of this community. Interviews with current residents and city officials will provide a dynamic narrative, delving into the challenges, uncertainties, and truths that shape the daily lives of Lincoln Heights’ inhabitants. Beyond chronicling the past, our endeavor seeks to unveil the village’s visionary blueprint for the future, emphasizing its commitment to innovation. By bridging the gap between historical struggles and present-day aspirations, we aspire to cultivate a deeper understanding of Lincoln Heights, fostering a narrative that transcends time and resonates with the collective spirit of perseverance and progress.

About the Artist: Alicia Redmond

As with many documentaries, a filmmaker may start with one idea in mind, and then a beautiful thing happens! The story that wants to be told emerges. This film doesn’t just expound upon the historical significance of Lincoln Heights, but it at it’s core is a story of a movement. More specifically, The Heights Movement, and one of it’s founders, Daronce Daniels, a fifth generation resident of Lincoln Heights. (Let me share personally that I’ve never encountered a fifth generation resident of any community!) Through intimate interviews, archival footage, and personal reflections, I aim to highlight one man’s unwavering spirit, the community he loves, and the collective efforts of it’s residents to reclaim and revitalize their heritage. The people of Lincoln Heights are not just preserving a history; they are actively cultivating a future that honors their past. My journey with this documentary is one of awe and curiosity, fueled by a commitment to storytelling that uplifts and empowers. By shedding light on the recultivation efforts in Lincoln Heights, I hope to inspire broader conversations about the importance of preserving Black heritage and the power of community-driven change. “Rooted In Love” is a testament to the enduring love for a place that continues to nurture the dreams and aspirations of its people.
